At a glance
- Semester 4 is dedicated to the Master's thesis, worth 30 ECTS.
- The thesis must be cross-domain. It can be a primary study, such as experimental or observational research, or a secondary study, such as a meta-analysis or systematic review, if your university allows it.
- You have two supervisors from different domains: one where you do the thesis, and one at the same or a partner institution.
- You finish with a written scientific report and an oral defence before an interdisciplinary committee.
- The joint degree certificate is conferred by the university where you were matriculated, and signed by every university where you followed 30 ECTS.
What you need to do
- Check which types of project your university allows, including any national laws, regulations or examination rules.
- Contact your Local Academic Mentor in advance about timelines, application procedures, choosing supervisors and local rules, especially if you do the thesis at a partner university.
- Define a clear research question grounded in a critical review of the literature.
- Write the scientific report and defend it before an interdisciplinary committee, reflecting on the ethical, legal and social (ELSA) implications of your work.
- Submit all required documents by the stated deadlines so your degree can be awarded.
Local procedures and deadlines
Thesis timelines, submission procedures and deadlines are set locally and are not in the handbook yet. Your Local Academic Mentor makes sure your thesis complies with the requirements of both your home and host university. You can also reach your university through university contacts.
Graduation
The graduation ceremony is your chance to celebrate and meet your study mates. Registration, the schedule and the dress code are published on the NeurotechEU website. Local career services can help you prepare for your next steps.
