About the Programme

The European Master in Neurotechnology (EMN) is aimed at outstanding students from across Europe who bring diverse academic backgrounds — from STEM to neuro-, cognitive and medical sciences — and a shared motivation to tackle the challenges of the future.

The programme is jointly organised by seven European partner universities, internationally recognised for the quality of their educational programmes and scientific achievements, ensuring students receive excellent training at the forefront of research and innovation.

Students choose a starting institution and a mobility track, gaining exposure to multiple research environments while earning a joint degree recognised across all partner universities. Ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) are embedded throughout the curriculum.

Curriculum Domains

The curriculum is structured around four domains. Students acquire knowledge from three out of four, each covering key aspects of fundamental and applied neurotechnology.

Brain Systems

Explores the anatomical and physiological foundations of brain functions — from molecular and cellular mechanisms to systems-level organisation — forming the scientific basis for modelling and interfacing with neural processes.

Clinical

Addresses neurological, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, their treatment through neurotechnology, and translation into diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative applications.

Technology

Covers neural recording and stimulation hardware — engineering of devices, sensors, stimulation methods and brain–machine interfaces that enable interaction with neural systems.

Computation

Covers neural data analysis, brain modelling, data science, machine learning and programming — bridging neuroscience and artificial intelligence to handle complex datasets and develop predictive models.

Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA)

Integrated across all four domains, ELSA ensures that graduates are equipped to navigate the ethical, legal and social dimensions of neurotechnology — from data privacy and informed consent to equitable access and responsible innovation.

  2. Semester 2 · 30 ECTS Domain specialisation and academic innovation Your home university Advanced study of two domains, set by your home university.
  3. Semester 3 · 30 ECTS Mobility, electives and industry engagement A partner university A third domain you have not studied before, plus electives from the partner’s course catalogue.
  4. Semester 4 · 30 ECTS Master’s thesis Home or partner university An interdisciplinary, cross-domain research project.
